Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
