2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Poor Response
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure informed employees about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had shown the requirement for a distinct game identity.
The president noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.
Trend of Strategic Hires
The news mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full content from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to endure.”
With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our fans.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. Following some time of talks, he starts with us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having dedicated the recent years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all eager to keep observing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.
David
Experience of the New Head

Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 together with a early access event. Initially, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary reads. "Take on the competition with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that evolve every session. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, put it on the line, and pray your squad can secure victory? The option is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or consoles, but enthusiasts can look forward to further news as production advances.
