Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
